Friends from virtual space

KOCHI: It was a unique get-together. Almost all who attended the gathering were meeting one another for the first time. Even their names were not familiar. But, they were friends! In cyberspace; through blogs.

The Bloggers’ Meet, held here on Saturday, provided a platform to these friends in virtual reality to come face to face with one another and meet fellow Malayalam bloggers. About 30 bloggers who live abroad and in Kerala participated in the meet.

It was interesting to watch the participants introduce themselves by referring to the blog names. The door opens, a hesitant young man peeps in and announces, `I am Sahayathrikan… ’ Squeals of recognition, followed by “Oh! you… ”

The world of blogging is expanding everyday. And Malayalam blogging does not lag behind. The large number of Malayalis employed in the Information Technolgy sector all over the world have ensured this.

The meet was inaugurated by Chandrasekharan Nair from Thiruvananthapuram who blogs under the name `Kerala Farmer,’ and Aachi, the youngest blogger. Vishwanathan, familiar to bloggers as `Viswaprabha,’ spoke about the tools that could be used to read and write in Malayalam on the Internet.

`Su,’ a blogger hailing from Kannur, and her husband (known in blogosphere as `Su’s Chettan,’) had arrived.

So also Athulya, based in Dubai along with her son Appu. `Mullappoo,’ `Durga,’ `Panikkan,’ `Chathunni,’ Sreejith, `Njan,’ and many others participated.

From morning till evening, the bloggers chatted away and had a sumptuous feast at noon.

For Malayalis living in exile, blogging has provided a unique escape route and a means to remain connected with their roots.

For the working people as well as housewives, blogging acts as a solution to separation from their homeland and mother tongue. Blogs help to build a community feeling and sharing. Most Malayalam bloggers share a deep interest in literature.

A couple of online magazines, including `Tharjani,’ also provide a good platform for the netizens to practise their literary talents.
